Tips & Advice for Getting the best out of the people you've got...
Now, more than ever, managers are being asked to achieve more with fewer people, and those people are feeling their motivation hit by uncertainty about their role, financial worries and team stresses.
So, the challenge is on to create and support a team that is focused and confident, and that will pave the way for the success of your organisation.
- Define your business in 2-5 years time. What makes you outstanding? Involve everyone in this exercise; clients, colleagues, managers and team members.
- If you had to create the perfect team, what kinds of skills, characteristics, personalities and expertise would you be looking for?
- Take a good look at your current team; their strengths, potential and areas of excellence.
- Match your team to the roles and qualities you defined in steps 1 & 2. Highlight the gaps and decide if they are critical to success, or can be adapted to a longer-term plan. Consult HR help if you have to re-draw job descriptions, etc.
- Communicate your unique organisational message to everyone, all the time. Make sure that your team, your promotional materials, your clients and customers share the same, clear message.
- Provide a safety net. It's likely that members of your team are taking on responsibilities and activities that are new and stretching. Ensure that they have a support structure / mentor / problem-solving strategy in place.
- Predict and tackle the obstacles. What is likely to stand in the way of your success? What action can you take to avoid or minimise these?
- Celebrate success. Say "thank you" and "well done" for everything, from daily commitment to reaching major milestones.
- Get help. Use your network of trusted managers, advisers and online sources to keep you on track, manage setbacks and share expertise.
- Take control of change within your organisation. Far too many managers are watching and waiting, seeing what happens and only then deciding what direction their business will take. For most of these, that reaction will be too late. Those that have developed a plan, brought their team on-side, defined their niche and built internal confidence, will be the successes of the future.
